Selenium is an essential trace element for mammals and birds. Selenium poisoning in farm animals may be caused by excessive selenium supplementation. The maximum immission values (MI values) for selenium listed in the guideline are designed to protect livestock kept in stalls, fields or enclosures, and foods derived from them. MI values are derived from experimental investigations to determine dose-time-response relationships. As such, they can be determined only for those farm animals for which experimental data are available. These are often herbivores (e.g. ruminants) which are kept outside for part or all of the year. Signs of intolerance are used as indicators of the effects of selenium on farm animals.
