The standard applies to passenger and goods lifts with the exception of evacuation lifts in evacuation mode and firefighters lifts in fire service mode. The standard helps planners, installers, operators, and emergency services and authorities having jurisdiction to ensure personal safety by fitting lifts with control systems which in the event of fire automatically send the lifts away from the danger area, causing them to proceed to the designated landing. The standard describes which fire events are deemed non-critical as far as use of the building is concerned and under what conditions continued operation of lifts in the building is permissible despite an initial fire alarm.
