This standard describes the special requirements for the determination of the bulk deposition and the wet deposition in water soluble anions and cations. The application of the standard allows the determination of water soluble anions (e.g. chloride, nitrite, nitrate, potassium, calcium and magnesium). Depending on the measurement task also further water soluble ions can be determined. Depending on the site and on the analyte different measurement results can be gained with the different sampling types. Typical application areas are: background measurements to study the long range transport of air pollution, measurements in the context of authorisation procedures for plants (e.g. TA Luft or FFH protected areas), control of the effectiveness of emission reductions or traffic related measurements. The sampling procedures described in this standard can also be used for the determination of metals and metalloids in atmospheric deposition at background sites (rural and less contaminated urban sites) with high precipitation (e.g. determination of As, Cd, Pb and Ni according to DIN EN 15841 e.g. for reporting to the European Commission). Analysis methods for further elements are described in VDI 2267 Part 2. Species which are undissolved in the sample are not covered by described method. The general requirements regarding type, layout, positioning and exposition of the sampling systems are described in VDI 4320 Part 1.
