The standard helps to precisely determine the origin and composition of ultrafine particles in order to be able to carry out a source analysis and, if necessary, a risk assessment afterwards. The term "ultrafine particles" (UFP) is used in this standard to refer both to the very tiny particles released naturally, e.g. during combustion processes, and to the nanoparticles present in products through technical processes and additives, which in individual cases (e.g. during the sanding of paints containing nanoparticles) can also be released into the indoor air. Both fractions, UFP and (technical) nanoparticles, will have to be determined by the same methods.
