Microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOC) result from microbial degradation processes and are preferably formed by moulds, but also from bacteria. MVOCs are emitted, i.a., from biogas plants, storage facilities of biogas plants, recyclable material sorting plants, or fermentation plants. This standard exemplary describes measurement strategies for MVOCs in ambient air as well as the measurement technique. The application of this standard requires knowledge of the series of standards VDI 2100 which describes the measurement technique for VOC analysis. MVOC measurements in ambient air can be helpful for the determination of the impact of installations and, if applicable, for the supervision after Installation- or process-related measures, for the identification of sources of potential microbial processes releasing MVOCs, and for screening purposes with regard to odour-related complaints of neighbours.
