The guideline applies to the recovery of sulphur from gases with compounds containing sulphur in Claus units and to downstream waste gas cleaning units. Waste gases especially from mineral oil refineries may contain more or less hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and other compounds containing sulphur. These can be converted to elemental sulphur in the Claus process. Originally, the production of sulphur (S) was the primary reason for the operation of Claus units. However, due to the recovery of sulphur from waste gases, the sulphur dioxide emission is reduced considerably and thus, Claus units contribute a great deal to air pollution prevention. In view of technical development, Claus units with a high degree of sulphur recovery can be operated at present as measures for pollution control.
